The Relay '07! Conflux Festival
Thurs. September 13, 2007, 4pm-7pm
What is the Relay? The Relay consists of fourteen improvising musicians,
separated into three trios, each trio in a different venue, and two extras, who
are the first "relayers". The Relay is set in motion when a relayer arbitrarily
shows up to a venue and relieves a musician. That musician, in turn, then
meanders to another venue to relieve another musician, and so on until the Relay
ends. The audience may stay and experience the transformations of a single
space with each new musician (relayer), or follow their favorite musician
around to other venues. There are no other rules, and it's simpler than it sounds.
There is no set music decided; it is completely improvised, and many of the
players have not even met each other before. Since 1992, this event has been
relaying itself all over the world: London, Berlin, Athens, Madrid, Beirut,
Paris and in New York which was held in 2005 at MoMA.
