-- metis explores the integration of improvised sound and the written word

metis is an interaction between the short experimental works of six
playwrights and the continuous improvisation of six musicians and one
lighting designer.

the playwrights have each prepared a short experimental piece, inspired by a
section of homer's *the odyssey*. they will perform them script-in-hand,
adjusting in the moment as the musicians respond to their performances. the
playwrights' words and gestures will serve both as inspiration and as raw
material for the improvisors -- as their spoken words will be manipulated
indirectly and directly via psychoacoustic effects and sound pedals, and
their appearance will be colored by lighting improvisation.

this experimentation with visual and sonic interaction is indicated by the
name *metis* -- the greek term for deceptive speech and appearance, and the
heroic trait of the traveler odysseus.

experimenters include amanda embry, andrea williams, andrew beal, ed bear,
gregory reynolds, jeff scot carey, julianne carney, marie evelyn, melisa
tien, melissa gawlowski, nick lesley, qui nguyen, and tariq hamami.

metis will take place at the tank at 279 church street in tribeca.

doors will open at 9 p.m. to a pre-show sound collage by aaron halley and
casey bloc. the metis experiment will follow shortly thereafter.

tickets will be $5, and will be available at the door.
